    Lesson Title:
    Filamentality Lesson
    Subject Area:
    Math
    Grade Level:
    Third
    Unit Title:
    Fractions are Fun
    GLCEs/ HSCE:
Understand that fractions may represent a portion of a whole unit that has been partitioned into parts of equal area or length; use the term “numerator” and “denominator” (N.ME.03.16).
Place fractions with denominators or 2, 4, and 8 on the number line; relate the number line to a ruler; compare and order up to three fractions with denominators 2,4, and 8
    (N.ME. 03.18).
    METS-S/NETS-T
Use information and communication technology tools to collect, organize, and evaluate information to assist with solving problems (3-5.CT.2).
    Essential Questions:
    What is a hotlist?
How much time is required to complete the assignment?
    Which game is more beneficial?
    Objectives:
Working with parents, students will spend time each night playing math games related to fractions. Parents will sign a log sheet indicating which game they played and length of time.
    Tools and Resources:
Teacher provided websites on filamentality, Computer and Internet.
    Rationale:
Students often use the internet for fun and games. They unfortunately do not realize that the internet also provides a wealth of interactive learning websites. This lesson will broaden the student’s knowledge of what is available on the internet and also reinforce their fraction skills.
    Sequence of Activities:
    Anticipatory Questions/Activity:
Who has the internet at home? If the internet did not have any chat rooms or fantasy games, would you still use the internet? If the internet only had informational websites, what kind of websites would you choose to use to learn information?
If a friend has ½ of a candy bar and another friend had ¾ of a candy bar, which friend has more of a candy bar? Would a number line help to figure out the answer?
    Body of Lesson Plan:
    Segment #1
(Artifact: link to real world, website, book, picture, etc.)
The teacher will take the class to the computer lab. While in the computer lab, the teacher will demonstrate the filamentality website,http://www.kn.att.com/wired/fil/pages/listfractionja1.html
During the demonstration the teacher will ask the class questions regarding which game to play and how each game might be played. After the students understand how to work the filamentality website, the teacher will ask a couple of students to play a couple of rounds of games and explain how they know their answers are the correct answer.
If a student were absent and need help on this assignment, the student can follow this link to watch a video on how filamentality works.
    http://fractionsarefun.pbworks.com/f/Jing_Filamentality.swf
    Segment #2
    (Factual information/Vocab
    Includes sample feedback loop)
Going to the website and using hyperlinks will be emphasized. The teacher will ask a student to write the correct address to the site on the board so all students will be able to type the address in the address bar correctly. The following questions will be asked, possible students responses are italics.
    What is a hyperlink?
    (Something that is fast)
Your half right, a hyperlink is fast. A hyperlink is a path from one webpage to another web page.
Once on another web page from a hyperlink, is the user limited to only that page?
(No, whenever I am on the internet I can go to other places)
Correct, the user is free to explore the rest of the website after using a hyperlink.
How would the user know/understand how to play the games?
    (Trial and error)
That is one way to learn, but the best way is to read the instructions before playing.
Do you know the signs of greater than, less than, and equal to?
(of course, we learned that in first grade)
That good because one of those games on filamentality will be using those signs.
    Segment #3
    (Includes multiple intelligence strategy:
    Hands-on, small groups, reteaching strategy)
Returning to the filamentality project, students need to understand and utilize the technology that is readily available to them. To prepare the students for this process use the following prompt:
Imagine that you found a really exciting website, how would you go about to remember where to locate that same website again for future use? What if you wanted to share all your favorite websites to your friends?
    Segment #4
(Detailed directions on how to complete activity)
Make sure the correct website address is listed.
    Turn on the computer.
    Click on the internet.
Type the filamentality address in the address bar and press enter.
Read the different options of games and choose which one you would like to do.
Spend about fifteen to twenty minutes a night playing the games to improve your understanding of fraction.
Make sure your parent or legal guardian fills the log sheet so you will receive credit for the hard work you have done.
Friday morning put the finished log sheet in the returning homework bin.
